Thus, the rather-hammy, over-the-top theatrics of McConaughey, who appears to be channeling a mix of Woody Harrelson's performance in "Natural Born Killers" and Robert Duvall's work in "Apocalypse Now." Bale is more measured, and more effective, as the sympathetic Quinn, inadvertently responsible for waking up the dragons two decades earlier. That was one of the more memorable, and deeply silly, scenes from "Reign of Fire" (Buena Vista, $29.99), an apocalyptic thriller following the efforts of gung-ho American import Van Zan and his beautiful, risk-taking helicopter pilot, Alex (Izabella Scorupco) to help community leader Quinn (Christian Bale) keep his people safe from the highly evolved, scaly creatures wreaking havoc around Britain. When it comes to the year's campiest image on the big screen, it will be tough to beat the shot of the newly buff Matthew McConaughey ("Frailty," "U-571") as dragon slayer Van Zan, flying through the air, ax in hand, hurtling toward a close encounter with a frightful fire breather. ![]()
